Whole-School Evaluation – Management, Leadership and Learning (WSE-MLL)

Dear Parents/Guardians,

In January 2025 Ballymakenny College was selected for inspection by the Department of Education Inspectorate.

A Whole-School Evaluation – Management, Leadership and Learning (WSE-MLL) is a comprehensive inspection process carried out by the Department of Education’s Inspectorate in post-primary schools. It is designed to evaluate the quality of school leadership, management, teaching, learning, and support for student wellbeing. The process is grounded in the principles outlined in Looking at Our School 2022: A Quality Framework for Post-Primary Schools, and it places a strong emphasis on affirming effective practice while identifying areas for development. A WSE-MLL also assesses how well a school engages with self-evaluation and how capable it is of implementing improvement strategies.

The Inspectors examine the following areas:

  • Quality of school leadership and management
  • Quality of teaching and learning
  • Quality of support for students’ wellbeing
  • Across their areas, school’s self-evaluation process and school improvement plan are also evaluated

The inspection includes classroom visits, feedback to teachers, review of documentation, surveys of students, parents and staff, and meetings with various stakeholders. Findings are compiled into a published report, which provides clear recommendations for school improvement and supports schools in their ongoing development journey.
